21st Century life
At the moment I am typing this on my Chromebook while my old Windows machine copies my iTunes library to a flash drive, and my new Windows machine installs the current version of iTunes. (My old Windows machine has been in purdah for years, running XP and disconnected from the internet. At least I had the good sense to isolate it when it's defenses stopped getting updates.)The point of all this is to try to get my music library moved over to the new version of iTunes for when my iPod Nano finally dies -- the display stopped updating in the past month and the battery is defunct so that I have to leave it plugged in on life-support all the time.
If I can get my music safely over to my new machine, I should be able to sync a new iPod to that version of iTunes when I finally give in and buy one. My original Nano was a gift. My friend was working at Apple and threw in all the perks -- the little stand, the remote -- and they all still work, though I did have to replace the adaptor that connects the USB plug to AC.
My 3.6 gigs of music are on the flash drive and now iTunes is importing it all. It seems like it should work... but I will be so surprised if it really is this easy.
When I do buy a replacement iPod it will be the first time I've bought an Apple product since the mid-'90s. Even I find that hard to believe, given how many thousands of dollars I spent on Macs in the '80s and '90s.
It seems to work! And shuffle (pretty much the only deity I have faith in) chose to begin with Blossom Dearie's "A Fine Spring Morning." Genius. Followed by "Winter" from Vivaldi's The Four Seasons.
Now I can run my old Nano until the wheels come off without fear of losing access to my music. Third song: "Don't Blame Me" by Thelonius Monk. This shuffle may be even better than the one I had before.
Ha! There was a gotcha after all. You have to move the folder containing all the music onto the computer and link that to iTunes. Instead of moving the music into the iTunes music folder, it just linked to the folder on my flash drive. I deleted everything and am copying over now. Isn't this exciting. Now this is blogging.
First song this time "In Spite of Ourselves" by John Prine and Iris DeMent... another winner.
One of the people on my Buffy board reminded me about rebooting my iPod, which I always forget you can do. I tried it and I now have a functioning screen again... but the battery is still defunct. Still, this puts off the day when I have to send money to Apple.
